Politeknik Kota Kinabalu merupakan politeknik yang ketujuh ditubuhkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia. Bagi memperkukuhkan kecekapan pengoperasiannya, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu telah diletakkan dibawah bidang kuasa pentadbiran Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi. Politeknik Kota Kinabalu telah memulakan operasinya pada pertengahan tahun 1996 di kampus sementara Sekolah Menengah Teknik Likas, dan bangunan komersil yang disewa di Inanam pada tahun 1999. Kini, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu telahpun memulakan operasi sepenuhnya di kampus tetap yang terletak di Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) sejak 1 September 2003. Kampus ini terletak di kawasan seluas 108 ekar dan mampu untuk menampung seramai 5000 pelajar pada satu-satu masa. Daripada 27 politeknik yang berdaftar di Malaysia, cuma dua politeknik yang menawarkan Program Teknologi Berasaskan Kayu iaitu Politeknik Premier Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Selangor dan Politeknik Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The wood industry has indicated an encouraging performance and has been the third important sector in Malaysia main commodity sector. This sector also gives a wide range of job opportunities in various categories. To realize this matter, ministry has created this program in two polytechnics which base in Selangor and Sabah.
This program also take into account the aspect of human resource development as one of the critical element that need to be emphasize, in order to enhance wood industry productivity, efficiency, effectiveness, quality and value added product.
The Diploma In Wood Based Technology will expose the students to the basic aspect of knowledge in Wood Based Technology. The course will be carried out in both theoretical and practical method such as lectures, practical in laboratories or workshops, industrial visit and practical training at firms. The scope of the program covers the following areas:
- Wood science
- Wood product
- Wood engineering
- Wood processing
- Forestry
- Management studies
- Drawing
- Statistics
PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the program, the graduates should be able to:
